Queenstown at a Glance

Vibrant, young and filled with vacationers, Queenstown is a fun destination for outdoor types who like to party hard after a day of wild adventures.

The Remarkables, a saw-toothed range of snow capped mountains, are visible across Lake Wakatipu from Queenstown. Take the Skyline Gondola for some of the best views in town. When you aren't enjoying Queenstown's considerable bar and club scene, the landscape calls. Take a bike on a scenic tour past lake shore, wineries, bakeries and other fun places. Enjoy trout fishing, or take a jet boat tour. Hang-gliding, horseback riding, bungee jumping and parasailing are also popular activities.

When you travel out of Queenstown, everything becomes quieter and low-key. Hike, take a scenic drive, discover helicopter tours or go skydiving. At night, you'll be able to sleep in peace and quiet without revelers disturbing your hard-earned slumber.

      Need to Know

Severe Weather Don't underestimate New Zealand's changing weather. Strong winds buffet the country and will bring rain and snow quite suddenly. During the winter the weather can be quite windy and clammy cold.

Safety Concerns Don't leave valuables in your car especially when it is parked at trail heads or other tourist-heavy destinations. In all cases, don't leave anything visible in the car seats as car break-ins are a problem.

Health Concerns Travelers are usually most comfortable if they are wearing insect repellent. The mosquitoes can be vicious. Undertows and riptides are present at certain beaches. Ask around to find safe swimming spots.
