Oberammergau at a Glance

Oberammergau is famous for the passion play it has put on every ten years since the 17th century. The town is also famous for its woodcarvers and its natural beauty.

If you are lucky enough to visit on a passion play year, you'll discover that the whole town is involved in the production. People from town grow out beards of Biblical proportions in order to take part in the play. In between times, people are always working on costumes and set pieces. If you visit during an off year, you can still see the costumes and the set where the famous play takes place.

Oberammergau's homes are decorated in a very unique way. Luftmalerei are the eye-popping, illusionist house facades. It's worth walking around town for a look at beer hall scenes, Little Red Riding Hood and Hansel and Gretel painted onto houses.
